Spend the day on Kachemak Bay in Homer!

Are you headed to Homer? Take a day and explore Kachemak Bay! There’s a special package with Mako’s Water Taxi, Across the Bay Tent-and-Breakfast and Smokey Bay Air.  Above, we pulled out for a shore lunch during our kayak trip!

Halibut, fresh greens and all the fixin’s at “Across the Bay”.

Cruise over by boat with Mako in the morning to Kasitsna Bay. There, Tony and Mary Jane Lastufka of Across the Bay Tent-and-Breakfast will be waiting for you. Take a four-hour kayak trip in the sheltered waters and explore around the Herring Islands. Enjoy lunch on shore at one of the islands!

After your kayak trip, drive 8.5 miles into Seldovia. Explore on your own before your short flight back to Homer. Have your camera ready!! The price? Just $220 per person, inclusive.

You might want to do what we did: stay a couple of nights in the wall tents by the beach. Tony and Mary Jane are great hosts–and they offer affordable packages: it’s $110 per person for accommodations and all your meals (including fresh Alaska seafood and produce from the garden!!).

Remember: you’re staying in a tent. So bring your sleeping bag. And the Lastufkas are VERY proud of their meticulous outhouses! Tony says “These are two of the best-looking outhouses in Alaska”. There’s also a wash house for showers. We spent a fair amount of time in the cozy lodge building, where there are a couple of comfy couches and big windows that look over the beach. And yes, there’s free wireless internet!

Oh, don’t worry if you’ve never kayaked before–it’s not a competitive sport. These are secluded waters–you’ll have a blast. They also have mountain bikes if you want to ride to town or explore some of the roads and trails in the area.
