Hiking on the Matanuska Glacier

This summer, the Mat-Su Valley is the place to make base camp for Southcentral Alaska adventures, and best of all, you can save some money doing it thanks to Alaskans-only specials offered by members of the Mat-Su Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Take a day and head to Talkeetna and take in the views of Denali. Go flightseeing, rafting or take a jet boat trip. For thrill seekers, try the zip line. After, sip on a locally brewed beer on the deck of the brewery or grab a glass of wine from the deck of Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge.

The core area of Wasilla and Palmer are great places for hikes. Try the new Settlers Bay Coastal Trail outside of Wasilla or hike the Butte near Palmer – both have great views of the mountains and are perfect for families. Later this summer, once the snow clears, Hatcher Pass and Independence Mine have some of the best hiking in Alaska.

Or, head up the Glenn Highway to Matanuska Glacier. There are several companies that do guided hikes on the glacier – this is the way to go, as they know the best routes, have the best equipment and know the best places for the ultimate glacier selfie. This year, Sheep Mountain Lodge is doing helicopter tours of the glacier, and they are teaming up with MICA Guides and Alpenglow Luxury Camping for overnight “glamping”, right on the glacier!f
