This is a great shot (above) taken from the deck at Kennicott Glacier Lodge. Kennicott is your base camp when you visit the historic mining district, in the heart of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Delicious family-style meals. Comfy accommodations and gracious hospitality. Come between August 19 and Sept. 11 and stay for as little as $99 per night (Main Lodge, Forest View rooms). Call ahead to reserve: (907)258-2350.

If you’re driving from Anchorage, it’s a good five-hour drive to Chitina, which is on the banks of the Copper River. If you want to drive back to McCarthy, budget an extra three hours to travel the last 60 miles. If you’d rather fly over the gravel road, catch a ride with Wrangell  Mountain Air (pictured, right). The trip from Chitina is a great flightseeing tour, too. Or, save your money for an awesome flightseeing trip from McCarthy. Call Wrangell Mountain Air: (800) 478-1160

Remember: the road is a good gravel road. If you have a rental car, you will VOID the rental agreement if you drive it. Go ahead—take a flight. The rest of you—just drive!

While you’re there in Kennicott, count on St. Elias Alpine Guides to show you around. They have glacier hikes, history tours and awesome fly-n-float trips on the Kennicott River.  !!  The NEWEST adventure is a fly-in kayak trip to the face of the Nizina Glacier (pictured, left). Call St. Elias Alpine Guides: 888-933-5427.

Call Kennicott Glacier Lodge for reservations now: (907)258-2350.
