If you’re driving from Anchorage, it’s a good five-hour drive to Chitina, which is on the banks of the Copper River. If you want to drive back to McCarthy, budget an extra three hours to travel the last 60 miles. If you’d rather fly over the gravel road, catch a ride with Wrangell  Mountain Air (pictured, right). The trip from Chitina is a great flightseeing tour, too. Or, save your money for an awesome flightseeing trip from McCarthy. Call Wrangell Mountain Air: (800) 478-1160

Remember: the road is a good gravel road. If you have a rental car, you will VOID the rental agreement if you drive it. Go ahead—take a flight. The rest of you—just drive!
