What’s the story? PenAir‘s CEO, Danny Seybert, is offering the sale as an apology to his customers in these communities as a result of a string of cancellations this summer. A perfect storm of high fuel prices, scheduled maintenance checks and some additional repairs left the airline with too few planes to fly the routes. This companion fare sale is Seybert’s way of saying, “I’m sorry.” Here’s a link to Danny’s apology.
Don’t wait around to take advantage of these fares. Destinations like the Pribilof Islands, Cold Bay and Katmai National Park just became much more affordable. I checked a couple of flights between Anchorage and St. George and they’re already sold out. The Pribilofs (St. George and St. Paul) are regarded as the “Galapagos of the North”, so some seats are sold well in advance to birdwatchers and photographers.
I’m a big fan of Cold Bay–it’s a sportsman’s paradise for hunters and anglers. And the Katmai area is a hot-spot for bear viewing and fishing, although the companion fare doesn’t work in June and July to King Salmon or Dillingham.
You must purchase your companion fare between now and Dec. 31, 2011 and travel must be completed no later than Dec. 31, 2012. Please DON’T wait until the last minute, though. Here is more information on the terms and conditions of the sale.
