That’s the big winter festival in Valdez. Make plans to head over to Thompson Pass for some awesome skiing, snowboarding and snomachine treks. Tailgate Alaska, which runs from Mar. 25 to Apr. 10, features heli-skiing, as well as chances for hiking on skins up to some great peaks…or getting towed by snowmachines! Big Mountain Taxi is offering snowmachine pulls up to some great spots!  CHECK THE WEBSITE. WATCH THE AWESOME VIDEOS! Organizer Nick Perata is quick to point out that 60 percent of the skiable terrain is intermediate….so this could be the chance for beginning boarders to come and hone their skills! Tailgate Alaska features a tidy little city of skiers/boarders at Thompson Pass. There’s a special warming hut–that’s got free wi-fi. Hang out and watch the action, while you plan your next run. Snow science education, side events, live concerts, daily BBQ, beer garden and parties run throughout the duration.

Two events, the World Extreme Skiing Contest and the King of the Hill contest are included in the Tailgate Alaska schedule. This is your chance to watch some of the boarders and skiers you’ve seen in those great films! Take a look at the website and see the events that look good to you. You can drive over to Valdez, or fly on Era Alaska. Stay at the Best Western Valdez Harbor Inn. You can have breakfast at the Totem–but get your coffee at the Rogue’s Garden. Lunch? Definitely the fish tacos at the Harbor Cafe. Check with the Valdez Visitors Bureau with any questions about where to stay or what to do.
