Cross-country skiers: is it finally cooling off?

Are you getting ready for the Tour of Anchorage on Mar. 8, 2009? There is a 25K, 40K and 50K for skate-skiers. Or, join me on the “Plain Jane” classic course for the 25K.  HA. The supermen and superwomen who ski the 50K start up at Hilltop Ski Area. Wimps and slow-pokes like me who ski the “Classic” course start over at Russian Jack. Everyone finishes up at the Kincaid Park Chalet.

Those of us who live here in Anchorage may take this race event for granted. But it’s a national-class ski tour. Folks come up to ski it. It’s really a g-r-e-a-t way to spend a Sunday afternoon in Anchorage. Lots of folks turn out to make the race happen.

Of course, Alaska Mountaineering and Hiking is your official outfitter for the race. Wax. Skis. Gear. They’ll even tune-up and hot-wax your skis. Paul and his crew do a great job. Here’s a shot of the cross-country wall. Note the hot-waxing table-top setting in the foreground. These folks think of everything:

Speaking of the trails in Anchorage, do you have your pin yet?  The Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage is the presenter of the Tour of Anchorage–and they sell trail pins to help pay for all the grooming. Pick up your pin at Alaska Mountaineering and Hiking–over by Chilkoot’s on at 2633 Spenard Rd.

Umm, the Nordic Ski people are advising us to stay off the trails until we get some new snow and they can run the grooming machines. I’m praying for snow. How about you?
