Okay. This one kinda snuck up on me. Forty years ago, I started writing a weekly travel column for the Anchorage Daily News.
When the first one came out, on Nov. 11, 1982, I clipped it out and sent it to my grandparents. Both of them were professional journalists.
After they died (RIP Thor & Mary), I inherited both the letter and the clipping.
It’s been a wild ride.
It’s interesting to read about the airlines: Wien, Western, Northwest and Alaska. It’s also insightful to see the prices they were charging to get to the Lower 48. SPOILER: fares are super-cheap.
Since I started writing for the News, many editors have guided me along the way. My favorites:
- Howard Weaver
- Jim Macknicki (RIP)
- Leon Unruh
- Kathleen McCoy
- Mike Campbell
- Tony Hopfinger (Alaska Dispatch)
- Scott Woodham
- Eric Adams (Alaska Dispatch)
- Victoria Barber
- Vicky Ho
- Chris Bieri (Chris is my current editor at ADN)
I’m always on the lookout for more travel stories. Please let me know by email ([email protected]) if you have a tip for me. Click HERE for the link to my stories at the Anchorage Daily News. Thanks for reading!
