It’s time to head to Fairbanks and visit Chena Hot Springs Resort.
OKOK. It’s not actually IN Fairbanks—it’s 60 miles out of town. But it’s worth the trip.
First, the hot springs make for a toasty dip on a chilly day. Pay attention to those hot springs. It’s the thermal power that heats the pools—and provides power for the whole resort. That includes the greenhouses where they grow their own produce for the restaurant!

Don’t miss a visit to the Aurora Ice Museum. Created from more than 1,000 tons of ice and snow, the museum is frozen year-round. Inside—everything is made of ice: the bar, the barstools, the sculptures, your cocktail glass—even the beds in the four rooms. This is a MUST see….and be sure and order an appletini. Fun fact: you can eat the glass (it’s made of ice).
The northern lights are a-blaze. Book a tour at the resort. It includes a special cat-train transport up to the top of Charlie Dome, where a warming yurt is set up. From the top of the dome—you get a full view of the northern sky—and the lights above.
Choose from other tours once you arrive, including a kennel tour with the sled dogs and an ATV tour.
Of course, my favorite tour is the Geothermal Energy Tour. If you’re lucky, resort owner Bernie Karl will do the tour!
