Part 2: The Great Talkeetna Bake-Off

In Destination, Talkeetna by scott

Special correspondent Miranda Atkinson gets a baking lesson from Talkeetna Roadhouse hostess Trisha Costello.

There are several moving parts that make your pie-making weekend on the Mighty Alaska Railroad a memorable one. First and foremost is the hands-on instruction from your hosts at the Talkeetna Roadhouse. “Our workspace was between the oven and the window, with tiny snowflakes making an appearance and offering a cool breeze while the smell of fresh apple butter wafted out of the oven behind us,” writes Miranda.

Miranda starts her journey to Talkeetna from Anchorage on the Mighty Alaska Railroad.

The special package, priced from $289 per person, includes a roundtrip train ride from Anchorage to Talkeetna. “My first train ride provided a gorgeous view of the mountains,” writes Miranda. “After having room to properly lounge on the train benches, I’m not so excited for my next plane ride in the middle seat.

Trisha spells out her baking instructions in the flour.

Properly outfitted with a Roadhouse apron, we were taught all the proper measurements and how to compose the perfect pie crust with nothing but our own two hands.”

This pie will be berry, berry good. <snork>
Into the oven it goes…where the magic happens.
