Ride the “Hurricane Turn Train” on the mighty Alaska Railroad

In Adventure, Anchorage, Destination, Railroad, Transportation by scott

Ride one of the last “flagstop” trains in the country. There are many homesteaders north of Talkeetna that use the train to get to and from their cabins. Riders literally flag down the train, which slows to a stop for pickups.

There’s no food service on the train…but we always stop at the Talkeetna Roadhouse and pick up a “to go” lunch. The train runs Thursdays-Mondays until mid-September. See the photos below. There are great views of Denali, the Susitna River and the massive bridge at Hurricane Gulch!  It’s $104 per adult for the ride. Call (800)544-0552.

CURRY JETBOAT ADVENTURE BY RAIL.Take the train one-way from Talkeetna to Curry and then board a jetboat from Mahay’s Jetboat Adventures for an exciting trip back to Talkeetna. Curry used to be an overnight stop on the railroad between Anchorage and Fairbanks. Your tour includes a walkaround of what remains…as well as a stop at a Dena’ina Indian encampment and trapper’s cabin. Cost: $155 per adult. LEARN MORE.

FLAGSTOP RAIL-N-RAFT. Combine your Hurricane Turn train ride with a float trip. Take the train to Chase…then get off. Umm…there’s no station or platform. It’s off the train and on to the trail! It’s a short walk to the banks of the Susitna River, where your guide will help you into the boat. From there, it’s a gentle float back to Talkeetna, with a few stops: spawning areas, a glacial silt island and a walk amoungst the flora and fauna! Rain gear and boots are included (just in case). Cost is $181 per adult. Lunch is provided!

It’s HURRICANE SEASON on the mighty Alaska Railroad! All aboard! (800)544-0552.
