VIDEO: A Day in Iceland

In Adventure, Parks, Travel Stories, Videos by scott

After flying into Reykjavik on Icelandair, it took us a little while to get used to the time zone (the same as the U.K.). Thankfully, our hotel, the Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Marina, had a nice breakfast spread for us. The next day, our guide “Gummi” with Icelandic Mountain Guides, picked us up in his oh-so-manly “Super Jeep” for a tour of the sites, including:geysir

a. The Icelandic Rift Valley at Thingvellir, where you can see two tectonic plates separating.
b. A hyper-active geyser in the Haukadalur Valley (pictured…it goes off once every 5-8 minutes).
c. The awesome Gullfoss Waterfall on the Hvita River.
d. The soak-your-cares-away geothermal baths and hot springs at Fontana.

It was a blustery January day as we set out in the Super Jeep (actually an über-modified Land Rover Defender), but that highlights the charm of Iceland: you can LAUGH at the nasty weather, since there’s always a spa and a hot spring around the corner!!
