Flying over Nizina River with Wrangell Mountain Air

Don’t miss the chance to visit Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. From Anchorage, it’s a five-hour drive to Chitina. From there, you can fly with Wrangell Mountain Air to McCarthy. Or, drive s-l-o-w-l-y on the McCarthy Road the final 60 miles to the parking lot.

Walk across the Kennicott River bridge, where Kennicott’s shuttle will pick you up for the ride up the hill to the lodge. You’ll drive through McCarthy–which is DEFINITELY worth a visit during your stay. See the museum and learn more about the history of the old mining district.

The 14-story Mill Building at Kennicott

Once at the Kennicott Glacier Lodge, you’ll look out over the glacier to the other side of the valley. The mountains are spectacular! Start planning your excursions right away, including a tour of the old Mill Building. Sign up for a hike on the glacier (your guide will provide crampons and basic training). Or, strike out on your own to hike up to one of the old mining camps (Bonanza Mine or Erie Mine).

Kennicott Glacier Lodge is right on “Main Street”. The “bed and breakfast” package includes accommodations in the main lodge with a shared bath/shower down the hall. The cost is $79 per person per night–and it includes a delicious breakfast. You can order a bag lunch to take with you on your adventures. Toss it in the backpack and off you go!

Take a flightseeing tour with Wrangell Mountain Air. You can choose from an extensive air tour–or pick a place in the park to go hiking–and Wrangell Mountain Air can pick you up after a few hours in the park!

It’s a great way to get a bird’s-eye-view of the Kennicott area, as well as some up-close views of awesome glaciers which surround it!
