SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT John Kreilkamp and his wife Julia Martinez recently traveled to Tanzania to go on a safari with Lendimi African Safaris. This is his report.
I have been involved with showing people around the state of Alaska for 40 years…and I noticed a subtle trend amongst those who came to Alaska after going to Africa: They appreciate the mountains, wildlife and fjords. But they are seasoned travelers who have seen something I had not seen- up until last month: Africa.

In Africa– the sheer number and close proximity of the animals leaves one…. gobsmacked…I mean OMG Gobsmacked!
We went on a nine-day trip to two of Tanzania’s crown jewels: the Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengeti National Park.

Our trip was organized by Lendimi African Safaris. One of the company’s co-owners, Amana Mbise, is a professor at the University of Alaska Anchorage.
The local connection made a big difference. We met with Amana several times before the trip. That took away the stress of the unknown — and we got excited about the trip. In addition to Lendimi’s published safari, we wanted some “insider” experiences along the way.

Tanzania accommodations: Lendimi’s staff met us on arrival at Mt. Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) in Arusha, Tanzania.
First night’s accommodations were in Arusha at Serena Quiet Lodge : gated, clean, quiet, safe, nice queen room, pool, good food on site.
Everywhere we went in Tanzania understood “service” to a T. Even the luxury tent camps included shower, flush toilets, electricity and queen beds. These camps inside Serengeti National Park feature elephants roaming through the compound occasionally.

Also, you’ll likely be serenaded at night by the sound of a lion roaring or hyenas “laughing” in the distance. Lendimi’s itinerary utilized the Nyikani lodges in Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. We asked to upgrade one of the nights before our trip to include a stay at the crater rim lodge at the Ngorongoro Rim, a must…was worth the extra shekels….just for the sunset and sunrise and the evening cultural program with the Masai. (Think jumping in tire tread sandals 32 inches off the ground) Breathtaking.

Guide: Our guide was PJ, Amana’s brother from Arusha…who worked for several NGO’s prior to his entry into guiding safaris.
PJ arranged for our “insiders” request. We went to his mother’s home in the hills near Arusha. We met his extended family and had a meal at their compound.

We also visited the elementary school nearby. The road there was rough. PJ has a subtle sense of humor…The roads are dirt, gravel and bumpy…he comically referred to them as an African “massage”. Yes the roads can be dusty but it’s is part of the “African Facial”. No extra charge.
Tanzania is a welcoming, lovely country. They are taking care of their unique national parks and natural assets well. You will see a gazillion animals UP CLOSE…it’s been called a bucket list trip….and now I know why.

Our safari truly was a phenomenal experience. I highly recommend Lendimi African Safaris.
TIP: To learn more about Lendimi African Safaris, stop by Amana’s booth at the Alaska Summer Showcase on Sat., Mar. 22. Amana will award one lucky visitor a $1,000 Lendimi gift certificate for two explorers to Tanzania!
