Alaska’s brief fall season has arrived like a wet blanket over what’s left of our summer!
But HEY–I LAUGH at the cold….and the rain, too. Take a “Weather Day” and head to the Nordic Spa at Alyeska Resort. We took a walk through the extensive wellness resort adjacent to the hotel in Girdwood with James Wilson, the spa director.
“There’s actually a protocol for how best to enjoy the spa,” he said. “It’s basically hot-cold-rest-repeat.”
Wilson recommends budgeting about four hours for a spa visit. “We want you to feel free to disconnect with the world, reconnect with your loved ones and feel better when you leave,” he said.
There are many stops along the spa path, including several cold plunge pools, plus warm- and hot-tub stations. Also, there are a couple different kinds of saunas. Take a walk along the Alpine Loop past the “Alaska Barrel Spas” where you can sweat it out and occasionally toss some water over hot rocks. Then there are “dry” saunas which offer a more traditional treatment.
Inside the spa, there are treatment rooms for massages and such, as well as the spa-only “Two Trees Bistro” with a cocktail/mocktail bar.

The all-day hydrotherapy pass starts at $109 per person. Or, choose the “Twilight Soak” package for $89 per person.
Another option: book an 8:45 a.m. massage or a 7:45 p.m. time and save 20 percent. Mondays-Thursdays are a little cheaper, from $196-$220 per person. Massage packages include full-day access to the hydrotherapy circuit.
