Can we just start calling it “The Mighty Alaska Railroad” from here on out? We love the railroad…and it is a MIGHTY engine that pulls the cars down the rail. YA.
Check out these pics from the wintertime Aurora Train. It runs on the weekends between Anchorage and Fairbanks. This is a great way to see the countryside. You’ll get to Fairbanks in comfort and style. There’s good beer in the bar car. You can bring your own food (many people do) or order some from the bar. There are extra mid-week departures between February 23 and March 30. These new departures make it easy to head north to see the Ice Carving Championships (technically called the “BP World Ice Art Championships“) in Fairbanks–and for students going back and forth for Spring Break (at discounted rates!). Special rates start at $269 round trip!
It’s not too early to start planning for summertime rail adventures. Enjoy great hikes and adventures near the Spencer Glacier and Grandview Glacier on the “Whistlestop” tours! Some of the tours include a stop at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center.
