I’ve spent decades in Alaska–exploring some incredible corners of the state. Explore Tours‘ 9-day all-inclusive Safari covers some of the best areas–the Kenai River, Talkeetna and Denali National Park. Above–we took an optional flightseeing tour up to Denali!! Here’s a preview:

a. Two days at the Kenai Riverside Lodge. This is a comfy lodge right on the banks of the world-famous Kenai River. My son caught a lunker Dolly Varden trout right at the boat launch! While you’re there, enjoy a cruise into Kenai Fjords National Park and a raft trip through the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge.

b. Two days at the remote Kenai Backcountry Lodge. Even though it’s a short boat ride away across Skilak Lake, you are in another world! This is a great lodge for hiking–or just relaxing. The views are spectacular!!

c. Talkeetna. One of our favorite quirky Alaska towns. Take an optional flightseeing tour over Denali.

d. Denali National Park. Take advantage of your close-in location to take a hike in the park. This Safari features two nights at the Savage River Campground.

BEARS! You want to see bears? Then check out Katmai National Park. Explore Tours is running a “Free Night Special” at Brooks Lodge, right in the heart of the park. The special is available between June 1 and June 20, as well as between Aug. 20-25, 2012.

In addition to the unique setting next to the Brooks River Falls (a favorite for feeding bears), Brooks Lodge offers great access to fishing, as well as the famous “Valley of the 10,000 Smokes” tour. Allow an extra day for the tour, which includes a trip from Brooks Lodge to an overlook of the valley that was covered with ash and pumice following the 1912 Volcanic eruption of Novarupta. This is a FASCINATING trip. You’ll have time to hike down from the overlook to the floor of the Ukak River valley and see how the water has formed a canyon through the soft pumice.  That’s the photo I took here–of the Ukak carving a path!

Don’t miss it!!
