Juneau trip report: 14 fun things + 4 yet-to-be-completed

In Alaska Travelgram by scott

I never miss a chance to go up on the Goldbelt Tram!

I love Alaska’s Capital City. It’s one of my favorite places to visit–and we have g-r-e-a-t friends there now. Here are some of the awesome things I did in Juneau in 1.5 days

Flew on Alaska Airlines flight #62 from Anchorage (and got upgraded)!

Rented a car from Avis at the airport (nice, sporty Camry w sun roof! )

Rode the tram, hiked to the cross

You’ve gotta ride the tram and you HAVE to hike up to the cross for the million-dollar view!

Went on the radio (KINY, KTOO) to talk up “Travel Pop-ups”

Went to “Forbidden Peak” brewpub in Auke Bay (twice) #TravelPopUp

went to Heritage Coffee (one downtown, one in the Valley) #TravelPopup

Walked the labyrinth (in the rain) and visited the Shrine of St Therese

Went to the Juneau Arboretum (it’s out north just past the Shrine)

Saw friends at the Hangar on the Wharf (Lanie Downs, Holly Johnson and Ralph Samuels). Nice photobomb by the Queen Elizabeth …bobbing in the background in the middle of Gastineau Channel!

Had dinner with friends in the Valley (at Forbidden Peak)

Saw Mendenhall Glacier (What’s left of it)

Looked for whales from the shoreline

No whales to be seen….but there’s a fishing boat!

Saw a black bear downtown in Elizabeth Peratrovich Park (one block from the Capitol)

Visited with hikers from China, Canada, Australia and Italy….encouraging them to hike to the Cross overlooking Gastineau Channel.

What I wanted to do:

helicopter ride to Mendenhall Glacier:

Boat ride up Taku River to catch fish

See the whales + lighthouse with Juneau Lighthouse Tours

Have an “Island Bleu” salad at Island Pub in Douglas

When is your next trip to Juneau? I took my XtraTufs and my raincoat!
