Last month we spent a couple of amazing weeks in Mexico. That included a few days in the lovely town of Atlixco.
The town, founded in 1579, is known for its abundance of flowers. In fact, the full name of the town in “Atlixco de las Flores”.

Located between Mexico City and Puebla, the town sits close to the giant volcano which separates it from Mexico City: Popocatépetl (17,887 feet).

There’s a smaller peak right in the middle of town, with a church built on top of the hill, Capilla del Cerro de San Miguel. It was a perfect day to take a hike!

The approach to the hill was just a few steps from our hotel “Casa de la Audiencia” on the town’s central square. It’s a relatively easy hike up the hill, on a path that wraps all the way around on its way to the church on the top.
Along the way there are some great views, both of the town and the mighty Popocatépetl …which always is puffing away with some white smoke!

Making my way up to the top, the chapel dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel has a commanding view and offers hikers a relaxing venue for a moment of contemplation.

The Capilla de Cerro de San Miguel was constructed in the 18th century. As is often the case with Spanish churches, it’s built on the foundation of a much older indigenous temple.

On the way back down, there’s a glass-finished bridge where you can walk out (stocking feet only) for a beautiful view of the town and the volcano. Everyone was taking pictures.

Also on the way down is a beautiful staircase ( “La Escalera Ancha” ), adorned with flowers–for which Atlixco is famous.

The hike up and down the hill is less than three miles. It’s just one of a thousand little moments that will help you fall in love with Mexico.
