Make 2023 the year you finally head to Kennicott Country, in the heart of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.

Kennicott Glacier Lodge is your “base camp for adventure” in the park. With this new “third night free” special, you can take more time to explore America’s largest national park!

Book online HERE. Or, call the lodge’s reservations office: (907)258-2350.

To get your third night free, choose “Main Lodge” accommodations. You can choose room-only, room with breakfast or room with all meals included. Choose your dates between May 27 and Sept. 4, 2023.

Here at Castle McMurren, we prefer the Main Lodge, since it has more of the old-mining-town feel. That includes the “shared bath” accommodations. Also, you’re much closer to all the goodies that come from the kitchen.

Our family has a checklist of great adventures. That includes enjoying a hearty breakfast at the lodge. If you’re planning a day of adventure–hiking, flying, rafting and such–the crew will pack you a lunch to go!

The omelets are great at Kennicott Glacier Lodge, but don’t forget about the pancakes.

Most adventures in Kennicott Country include a call to St. Elias Alpine Guides. They can show you around town, around the glacier and around the park. The office is literally across the street from the lodge.

Take a tour of the 14-story Mill Building with St. Elias Alpine Guides.

First on the list is an exclusive back-of-the-house tour of the giant Mill Building. “The tour gives a great introduction to the area at large, bringing to life the formidable story of the discovery and capitalization of one of the richest copper ore veins in history, providing historical context for the rest of your trip,” writes Anya Voskresensky, manager and lead guide.

Exploring the Root Glacier with St. Elias Alpine Guides.

Another must-do adventure is a hike on the Root Glacier. Your glacier guide will outfit you with crampons for walking on the ice! Choose from a half-day hike, a full-day hike or try some ice climbing.

The adventurers at St. Elias Alpine Guides can set up all sorts of trips: rafting, backpacking, camping, packrafting, or even some custom fly-out adventures.

Flying in a DHC-2 “Beaver” with Wrangell Mountain Air over a glacier

Speaking of fly-out adventures, Wrangell Mountain Air is our go-to air tour operator in McCarthy/Kennicott.

Wrangell Mountain Air flies twice a day between Chitina and McCarthy. It’s the most-scenic way to reach Kennicott Country. Start by flying over the mighty Copper River. Then, your pilot flies through mountain passes and over glaciers. You’ll get a bird’s-eye view of Kennicott on final approach to McCarthy. The Kennicott Glacier Lodge shuttle will pick you up at the airport and take you to the lodge.

Book a flightseeing tour when you’re back in McCarthy to see the far reaches of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Choose from 30-minute flights to two-hour air tours. Wrangell Mountain Air also offers “air support” for your backpacking or packrafting trip.

Enjoy a tall, cool one on the deck at Kennicott Glacier Lodge after a day of adventure!

You can definitely hone your hiking skills when visiting Kennicott Country. Whether you’re climbing on the glacier, or hiking up behind the lodge to the old copper mines, you’re bound to work up a thirst. But save room for dessert: there’s a great pastry chef in-residence.

Start planning today–and get your third night free when you stay in the Main Lodge. Come for the history of Kennicott, which once was the world’s largest copper mine. Stay for the adventure–in the nation’s largest national park, Wrangell-St. Elias. And maybe for the dessert. Yes…definitely stay for dessert!
