Springtime is the magic season in Talkeetna. The northern lights are out…and so is The Great One (Denali). The Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge opened early this year for all the adventurers who wanted a comfy base camp!

The lodge is priced for fun in March and April, with rates starting at $139 per night. So check in, then head out on an adventure:

a. Go dog mushing at Dallas Seavey’s “AK Sled Dog Tours“. This is perfect mushing weather–the sun is out, there’s a good snow pack and the dogs are in a great mood. Learn all about what it takes to win the Iditarod Sled Dog Race five times!! See the dogs. Check out the gear. Then go for a ride. Yee-haw!

Mush!!

b. Rent a fat bike (e-bikes, too!), some cross-country skis or snowshoes from Talkeetna Gear Shop. I stopped by to visit with Hailey DeReamer, who also leads tours on the bikes in the winter. Talkeetna has a robust system of trails to you can get out and see the lakes, the forests and rivers surrounding the town .

c. Go flightseeing with K2 Aviation. The airport is literally one mile away from the Lodge…and the crew will come and get you at the front desk. Choose from several flightseeing tours around Denali. I love flying with these folks–you will too.

Landing in the Sheldon Amphitheater of Denali’s Ruth Glacier.

Make your springtime adventure plans in Talkeetna….start at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge! Oh–shot o’ the day, below, is looking over the frozen Susitna River at sunset. In beautiful downtown Talkeetna.
