ALL A-B-O-A-R-D the Mighty Alaska Railroad’s Aurora Train!

In Adventure, Parks by scott

It’s all “Winter Ops” at the railroad. That means weekly (and some mid-week) runs on the “Aurora Train” between Anchorage and Fairbanks. This is a great way to see Alaska’s stark winter landscape. We did it. We got the t-shirt. And we saw some sights along the way. Here are some specials for the winter train:

1. Talkeetna Pie Making. Have you been to the Talkeetna Roadhouse? We all love Trisha Costello and her crew. And that lady LOVES to bake. She and her crew host a pie making class — and you can ride the rails! Ride north from Anchorage to Talkeetna on Saturday. Make some pie. DEE-LISH! There’s plenty of free time to explore the Unique Kingdom of Talkeetna (I recommend visiting the brew-pub across the street!). Just save some room in your lap for the ride back. EVERYONE gets a pie. YUM! CLICK for details.

2. Winter Escape. Just GET OUTTA TOWN! Take the train north. Enjoy the sights. You’ll arrive in Fairbanks in time to grab a bite to eat (I like Lavelle’s Bistro btw). Overnight accommodations are included…and so is a flight back to Anchorage. Yes, it’s true: 12 hours north, 55 minutes back. HAHA. CLICK HERE.

3. The Aurora Train runs north on Saturdays and returns on Sunday all winter long. But on select dates from December through March, the train heads north on Tuesdays, returning on Wednesdays. Between Christmas and New Year’s, plus during Spring Break, there will be a THIRD northbound departure on Thursday. More options during the school breaks! So you can use this weekly schedule to make your own holiday package!
